Today global attention is focused on war and international relations.  But on November 20 CBC reported that a study by the McKinsey Global Institute revealed that obesity is costing the world’s economy almost $2 trillion, “nearly as much as smoking or the combined impact of armed violence, war and terrorism”.  According to The Guardian obesity costs the United Kingdom £47 billion a year, more than armed violence, and terrorism, but second in cost to smoking.

Factors for obesity include an unhealthy diet and lack of physical exercise.  In an article published 10 November, WebMD reported that in addition to lung cancer air pollution plays a role in many more health problems than lung cancer and can be just as bad as obesity.

Milk: More or Less

Canada Food Inspection Agency issued a notice on October 8 that Agropur Coopérative put out a recall for Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario for milk distributed by PC Organics, Natrel, and Irresistibles Bio due to spoilage.  The milk expired between October 18 and October 31.  It’s probably in stomachs now or down the drains so it’s too late to worry.  Canadians (and people around the world) probably still have milk in their fridge.  But are there benefits to milk?

It was winter and Toronto was cold; so the professional forecasters decided to finally speak. But CBC reported they didn’t agree; Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia said Spring would spring but Ontario’s Wiarton Willie said “6 more weeks of winter”.  America’s most famous underground predictor, Punxsutawney Phil from Pennsylvania decided to agree with Willie.  So people across the country were wondering, “Should we smile wide, hoping for an early spring, or should we be prepared for 6 more weeks of snow?”

But did you know there are people who are depressed when spring starts and some who don’t smile whenever there’s snow? Continue reading
