What the big 5 in the Council say about the conflict

After the demand of the release of political prisoners in Damascus and Derra, leading to the shootings that killed protesters, a nationwide uprising slowly began in 2011. Today Syria has grown to an all out civil war to which around nations around the world are debating whether or not to react, including the UN Security Council – the USA, the UK, France, Russia, and China.
Who’s ahead of who?

According to a poll reported by CTV/Ipsos Reid “Liberal support among decided voters at 33 per cent, [is] down three points from last month, the Conservatives [are] at 30 per cent, unchanged from last month, and the NDP up one percentage point to 28 per cent support“.

Chapter IV Article 9 of the Charter of the United Nations states that all its members are part of the General Assembly. According to Chapter V Article 23 the exclusive Security Council is a group of 15 nations in the United Nations. France, China, “the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics [today represented by Russia]”, the UK and the USA are permanent members. The other 10 members are elected for two year terms. Presidency of the Security Council is rotating – each member occupies presidency for a month and releases a statement.
June’s presidency was held by the United Kingdom. July’s presidency is held by the United States.
