Canada: Economy and Unemployment

Rahman Mohamed

Some say Canada’s economy is in turmoil.  Is it?

According to Statistics Canada Real GDP by expenditure was up 0.5% in the second quarter of 2025, monthly imports were up 1.4% and monthly exports were up 0.9% in June 2025. At the same time household disposable income was up 0.8% and the household saving rate was at 5.7% in the first quarter of 2025.

It seems many are forgetting the demographic make-up of Canada. 14,209,055 are between the age 15 to under 40. Many of these have education but how many have relevant experience? There are 15,437,475 between 40 and 69; with the new retirement age of 67 you can’t discount the older folk.

In July 2025 the unemployment rate of Canadians aged over 15 was 6.9%. The unemployment rate for aged 15 to 24, 14.6% was the highest. After growing it started to sink at Canadians aged 54 years.

Unless people over the age of 54 can crack AI, use Smartphones, and thrive in a technological environment a collapse may be coming to the Canadian economic environment.
